Last House – Tangalle’s best-kept secre
The Red Dot sales and operations team travelled to the south coast last week to inspect beach properties. The first port of call was The Last House, the last private villa designed by Geoffrey Bawa, Sri Lanka’s most famed architect. We arrived tired and exhausted after the bumpy 6-hour drive along the Galle Road from Colombo but soon relaxed on entering the property. The Last House has attracted steady business from Red Dot client’s during the past 2/3 years after Tim Jacobson, the owner of the villa and The Kandy House, decided to start selling rooms in the villa. The property now operates as both a private beach villa for groups and families or a small boutique hotel for couples and small groups. Those who had not seen the villa soon realised why it is one of the best-kept secrets of Tangalle with its simple design, open look, beautiful furniture and breathtaking sea views.
The beach is one of the best in the island, long, wide and undeveloped. Red Dot staff, though, headed straight for the pool. Cocktails and a candle-lit dinner, served on the dining terrace looking-out onto the beach, followed with fresh fish, crab and prawns. The next morning the team experienced the tranquil magic of a south coast sunrise. The villa has five bedrooms, two large ones in the main house and three rooms in a separate wing on the ground level. The villa is managed by Ananda and a friendly team. A recent Red Dot client, who stayed at some of the island’s best properties, said the Last House staff were the best team he’d come across on his travels. Sadly, though, we had to leave straight after breakfast as Dirk, the trip organiser, had a whole day of properties to see.
