Weligama Bay Resort – at last!
The Weligama Bay Resort was supposed to open in time for the 2007 England cricket tour, then April 2008, but we are pleased to announce its arrival has final come. We have long felt that there is a shortage of quality beach hotels in the island with only The Fortress standing out between Galle and Matara (excluding small boutique hotels). Thus, Weligama Bay Resort comes at just the right time – as has Mandara Resort in Mirissa. The property has 24 luxurious rooms, garden villas and suites. Rooms have large slatted timber windows which allow the tropical sunshine and sea breeze to flow through, boarded teak floors, high roofs and wooden ceilings, and whitewashed walls.
The main building opens out to a large garden scattered with swaying palms and a swimming pool. The main dining area is on the fringe of the beach with views of the Indian Ocean. The Resort is a member of the chain of American-based EPOQUE Hotels. The Red Dot sales team were impressed with the facilities and also with the food as the chef turned out no less than ten tasty Sri Lankan curries for a much-needed lunch. The owners are serious about their food and have employed some leading chefs. The surrounding area offers plenty to do. The Weligama beach is magnificent and there is Mirissa beach also nearby. Mirissa Watersports offers a variety of watersports, including sailing, deep sea fishing and even whale trips in the season. Galle Fort, a UNESCO-protected walled city, is a 20 min drive to the north.
